Bundled home and auto, or separate policies?

Compare the whole household cost and the coverage behind it. A discount on one policy does not, by itself, identify the better overall option.

Start with a fair comparison

Ask for the same dwelling and liability limits, roof settlement basis and deductibles wherever possible. Then list any differences that cannot be matched. Comparing a lower premium with a larger deductible or reduced coverage answers a different question from comparing equivalent protection.

Put the prices on the same time basis

An auto premium covering six months should not be added to a full-year home premium without explanation. Request comparable annual figures or clearly show each policy term. Include known policy fees and payment-plan costs when comparing the total. If you double a six-month premium to compare annual costs, label it as a projection; the next renewal premium can change.

An invented example

Assume matching coverage and annual terms solely for this arithmetic example. A bundled option has a $2,600 home premium and $1,400 auto premium: $4,000 combined. Separate options have a $2,300 home premium and $1,800 auto premium: $4,100 combined. The lower home premium alone would point to a different answer than the combined total. These figures are invented, are not rates or quotes, and say nothing about the availability of either arrangement.

Check what happens later

Ask whether a discount depends on keeping both policies, how a later vehicle or household change affects the arrangement, and whether renewal dates differ. TDI notes that discounts vary and may be available for buying other policies with the same company. TDI home-insurance shopping tips

Bring the comparison to your review

Write down the total premium, important coverage differences and the questions still open. Compare the proposed start dates before replacing existing coverage. Review the home and auto pages for the questions behind each policy. A quote comparison or website request does not bind or change coverage. Before cancelling either old policy, get the replacement policy or written confirmation of its coverage and verify the effective dates.
