When umbrella coverage deserves a review
An umbrella review starts with liability limits on existing home and auto policies. TDI describes umbrella insurance as additional liability protection that may help with covered losses beyond other policies’ limits. TDI liability coverage explanation
A checklist for your next policy review
Use this as a worksheet, not a recommendation for a particular limit. Bring the answers to your advisor and confirm them against the proposed policy.
- Gather the liability limits and renewal dates for your home, auto and any other policies you want included.
- List household drivers, vehicles, properties and activities to discuss. Note changes since your last review, including a new driver, rental property or vehicle use.
- Ask which underlying limits the umbrella requires, whether all relevant policies qualify, and what happens if an underlying policy lapses or its limit changes.
- Confirm who is insured, what must be disclosed, and which exclusions, retentions and defense provisions apply.
- Compare available limits and household-specific quotes alongside the cost of any required changes underneath.
- Before accepting a proposal, confirm the effective date and how future household changes should be reported.
Keep the policy details together
Keep a dated copy of the underlying limits and the questions still unanswered. A household change is a reason to review, not proof that a claim is covered. An umbrella does not automatically fill every exclusion in another policy.
Read the umbrella service page for the coverage overview, and use your home and auto declarations for the limits underneath. Booking a call or submitting a website request does not bind coverage.
